Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by joelapinski on Tuesday 18 June 2013 at 1:45 pm

30-year old righty swinging LF Carlos Quentin has been on fire in June with the bat.  He started slowly this year with the bat but he’s making up for lost time now.  Quentin has played in 12 games so far in June for the Padres and he is 17 for 43 (.395 avg, 1.085 OPS) with 8 runs scored, 2 homers and 5 RBIs.  He is locked in at the plate as he has walked 6 times this month against only 4 whiffs.  Quentin has now played in 50 games for the Padres so far this year and he is 41 of 157 (.261 avg, .838 OPS) with 26 runs scored, 7 homers and 22 RBIs.  The Padres have got hot right along with Quentin, so they need him to keep ripping the heck out of the baseball.

The Padres have designated 32-year old lefty swinging catcher John Baker for assignment.  Baker played in 16 games for the Padres this year and he was 6 for 40 (.150 avg, .411 OPS) with 2 RBIs.  He played in 79 games in his two years with the Padres and he was 52 of 233 (.223 avg, .559 OPS) with 17 runs scored, 0 homers, 16 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.  Baker has now played in 291 games in his first six years in the majors and he is 231 of 894 (.258 avg, .705 OPS) with 115 runs scored, 14 homers, 105 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.  The Padres shouldn’t miss Baker too much moving forward with Yasmani Grandal and Nick Hundley behind the plate.

UPDATE:  (6/15/2013) - The Padres have lost John Baker on waivers to the rival Los Angeles Dodgers.
